PINEAPPLE
FACTORY & FRUIT JUICE DISTILLERY
Among
other things, Moorea is known as the "Pineapple Island" for its abundance
of well established Pineapple plantations yeilding large and commercial quantities
of the tasty fruit. These plantations make for an interesting visit if you're
so inclined. Many sell their fruits to Moorea's largest and most famous fruit
processing plant and well known juice company- Jus de Fruits de Moorea, (sporting
the brand name "Rotui" fruit juices, from which you are sure to try
if you spend any more than one day on the island). The fruit processing plant
has become a popular sightseeing attraction over the years.
There are no organized
tours or particular times to visit- just showing up and wandering into the factory
is accepted (daytime hours obviously, see details below).
It's really quite interesting. You'll see conveyer belts
with various people doing specific jobs relating to pineapple or fruit processing.
Chopping, cleaning, quality controlling, joking, loading trucks, etc.
After you've seen the process, it's time
to taste the products at the very nice specialty store on the property that
sells just about every kind of local fruit product you can think of! Pineapple
liqours and various other tasty fruit juices, Pineapple and Grapefruit gifts,
Papaya T-shirts and pareos, and lots of other products you can only buy here.
The whole visit can be casually made in about 1 hour.

ANCIENT MARAES & ARCHEOLOGICAL SIGHTS
The ancient Maraes (pronounced MAH - RISE) of Moorea are symbols to many of the history of the polynesian islands themselves. Fascinating and well studied sources of archeological interest, these Maraes are amazing to experience even if you're not a big history buff.

Marae Tetiroa's ancient
Banyan trees are a sight to see... |
Moorea has quite
a few of them in good or restored condition and they are not hard to find if
you know their general locations. (Some of the largest and most impressive are
right off the side road that goes to the Belvedere lookout.)
You'll have to keep an eye peeled for the signs, but they are well worth stopping,
wandering about, photographing, and wondering of what used to be...
Many of Moorea's regularly running tour operators make these Marae their regular
stops and can explain quite a bit about their interesting history and lore.
(See 4x4 Excursions and various Sightseeing Tours on our
"To Do" pages for list of companies traveling to these Maraes regularly, or discover them on your own via our "Do it yourself" road tour.)

PAPETOAI TEMPLE
Located
in the village of Papetoai on Moorea (at Pk 21), the Papetoai temple (church)
is one of the more interesting among the dozens of churches found throughout the
islands of French Polynesia. Originally built by missionaries between 1822
and 1827, (and rebuilt since then), this unique octagonally shaped church is the
oldest European building in the South Pacific.
Deliberately built on top of
an old marae, (can you guess why?), today there still stands one large spike shaped
stone on the property left as a reminder of its Polynesian past.
